Tournament Bound — Waiheke Takes on Howick!
Seven brave souls set their alarms early on Saturday morning, caught the 7.30am ferry as the sun was barely up, and crossed the water to take on the best junior and intermediate players at the Howick Bridge Tournament — and what a day it turned out to be! It was the intermediates who had the vision — encouraging their junior clubmates to make the trip and experience tournament bridge for the first time together as a new club. And what better way to bond than fifty (yes 50!) boards of bridge, a ferry ride, and the thrill of competition?
The Results
By the halfway point, things were already looking promising:
Janice & Lisa were sitting in 3rd place overall
Robyn & Jan were holding strong in 5th place in the juniors
And at the end of the day? Janice and Lisa took home a Session Prize — and a very well-
deserved bottle of wine each!
The Players
Chris Cureen, Christina Hyde, Diane Bridgeman, Lisa Kennedy, Janice Hinch, Robyn
Manuel, Jan Robertson.
More than just bridge
The real magic of the day wasn’t just in the scores. During the lunchbreak, and on the ferry
there and back, the junior players soaked up advice, encouragement, and a little tournament
wisdom from their intermediate companions. That kind of mentoring is worth more than any
prize. Fifty boards of bridge, home by 7pm, and already talking about the next event.
We have to get tournament fit — and days like this are exactly how we do it!
